A.C.T.S. reflection
Mark 13:32-37
32“But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—36lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
Adoration
Father, we praise You for knowing the day and hour hidden from us, and we honor Your wisdom as we await our returning Lord.
Jesus says that concerning the day or hour, no one knows, “but only the Father.” The Father's knowledge exceeds that of every creature, including “the angels in heaven”. Jesus also includes “nor the Son,” plainly distinguishing the Father's knowledge here without explaining that mystery. We praise the Father for His knowledge and wisdom rather than claiming to know His timetable.
Confession
Lord, we confess that we neglect the work You have entrusted to us, living as though our Master will not return.
The master puts his servants in charge, “each with his work,” and commands watchfulness. The warning is that he may “come suddenly and find you asleep.” The central failure is neglecting our entrusted work as though the Master's return did not matter. Believers also need this warning, because Jesus says, “I say to all: Stay awake.”
Thanksgiving
Jesus, thank You for perfectly completing the work the Father entrusted to You and for dying to bear the penalty for our neglect of Your work.
The description of servants, “each with his work,” exposes our need for a Savior who does not neglect His entrusted task. Jesus perfectly completed the work His Father gave Him, unlike our neglect of what He entrusts to us. In dying on the cross, He bore the penalty for that neglect. His saving death is not directly described in these verses, but it answers the guilt exposed by His warning.
Supplication
Holy Spirit, awaken our hearts to our Master's coming, and make us faithful in the work He has entrusted to us while we wait.
Jesus commands, “Be on guard, keep awake.” His picture of servants, “each with his work,” shows that readiness includes faithful service rather than merely watching for signs. Because “you do not know when the time will come”, obedience must not depend on knowing a date. The Spirit grows this steady readiness in us so that we remain faithful while awaiting our Master.
