The A.C.T.S. Prayer Model
A.C.T.S. stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. It is a simple four-part pattern for prayer that helps you move from focusing on God, to honesty about yourself, to gratitude, and finally to your requests.
Why use A.C.T.S.?
Many people find their prayers drift into a list of needs. A.C.T.S. gives prayer a shape: worship comes first, so that confession, thanks, and asking all flow from a clearer view of who God is. It is easy to remember, works for a two-minute prayer or a long quiet time, and is often taught in churches, small groups, and to children.
The four steps, with an example from John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16, ESV)
Adoration
Praise God for who He is. Adoration focuses on His character — His holiness, love, faithfulness, and power — before asking for anything.
Example: God, You so loved the world. Your love is not small or reluctant; it gives everything.
Confession
Honestly name where you have fallen short. Confession is not self-punishment; it is agreeing with God and receiving His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Example: I confess I often love comfort more than people, and I hold back what You freely give.
Thanksgiving
Thank God for what He has done — gifts, answered prayers, and above all salvation in Jesus Christ.
Example: Thank You for giving Your Son, and for the promise of eternal life to everyone who believes.
Supplication
Bring your requests to God, for yourself and for others. Supplication comes last so your asking is shaped by worship, honesty, and gratitude.
Example: Help me trust You today, and draw my friends who don't yet know You to believe.
How to pray through a Bible verse with A.C.T.S.
- Choose a short passage and read it slowly, two or three times.
- Ask what the verse shows you about God — that becomes your adoration.
- Notice where the verse presses on your own heart — that becomes your confession.
- Find a gift or promise in the verse to thank God for.
- Ask God for what the verse invites, for yourself and for someone else.
The A.C.T.S. Grid Bible Verse Study walks you through these steps for any passage. You can fill in the grid yourself first, then compare with a guided reflection.
Tips for using A.C.T.S.
- Keep it honest and specific rather than polished.
- Don't rush adoration — it reshapes everything that follows.
- Write your prayers down in a journal to see how God answers over time.
- Pair it with a daily reading plan so you always have a passage to pray through.
