A.C.T.S. reflection

1 Peter 4:7-11

7The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Adoration

Father, we praise You for Your varied grace, which equips us to serve one another with gifts and strength that come from You.

God generously equips His people with gifts described as “God’s varied grace”. He also sustains their service through “the strength that God supplies”. These words show that both our ability to serve and the strength to continue come from Him.

Confession

Lord, we confess that we withhold love from one another when we are sinned against, instead of continuing to love earnestly.

The central command is “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly,” making the withholding of love a central failure exposed here. The words “love covers a multitude of sins” show that earnest love must continue even when others offend us. This does not mean concealing wrongdoing, but refusing to make another person’s sins a reason to stop loving them.

Thanksgiving

Jesus, thank You for perfectly loving those who sinned against You and for dying to bear the penalty for our withholding love from one another.

The command to “keep loving one another earnestly” exposes our need for a Savior whose love does not fail as ours does. Jesus perfectly loved those who sinned against Him and bore the penalty for our withholding love through His death. Although these verses do not directly describe His death, they place the glory of our service “through Jesus Christ”, rather than treating Christian love as an achievement independent of Him.

Supplication

Holy Spirit, grow earnest love in our hearts so that we keep serving one another even when loving others costs us something.

The godly life takes shape in the command to “keep loving one another earnestly”. This love becomes practical through “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling” and the instruction to use each gift “to serve one another”. The Spirit grows love that continues in costly service, depending on God’s supplied strength rather than merely on favorable circumstances.

Prayer prompt
