Romans 8:1–17

1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. 12So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Adoration

God is worthy of our worship because He does what we cannot do: He rescues us from sin and welcomes us as His children. His power gives life, and His love brings us near enough to call Him Father.

Paul declares, “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.” This draws our worship toward God’s saving action rather than our ability to make ourselves righteous. The words “the Spirit of life” reveal His life-giving power, which frees people in Christ from sin and death. That same power reaches toward our future, with the promise that God will “give life to your mortal bodies.” Yet His greatness is not distant: the cry “Abba! Father!” shows that the God who saves also welcomes His children into closeness with Him.

Confession

This passage invites us to acknowledge where our thoughts and choices resist God rather than follow His Spirit. We can confess honestly without hiding, because those who are in Christ Jesus stand under His mercy, not condemnation.

The contrast between “the things of the flesh” and “the things of the Spirit” invites us to examine what occupies and directs our minds. Paul describes the mind set on the flesh as “hostile to God,” exposing a resistance deeper than occasional mistakes. His call to “put to death the deeds of the body” asks us to take sinful actions seriously rather than excuse them. Crucially, this happens “by the Spirit,” so confession leads us toward dependence on God rather than lonely self-improvement. The opening promise of “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” gives us a secure place from which to tell the truth about our sin.

Thanksgiving

We can thank God for freedom in Christ, the presence of His Spirit, and the gift of belonging to His family. Even when suffering remains, we have reason for gratitude: we are not abandoned, and death will not have the final word.

The words “now no condemnation” give us a clear reason to thank God: in Christ, our standing is no longer defined by a condemning verdict. Paul also says that “the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus,” making freedom a gift to receive with gratitude. The phrase “the Spirit of adoption as sons” takes that gratitude beyond release from judgment into the joy of belonging. We are called “heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,” sharing a future we could never earn. Although verse 17 includes suffering with Christ, the passage also promises resurrection life, so our thanksgiving can hold both present sorrow and lasting hope.

Supplication

Ask God to turn your mind toward His Spirit and help you turn away from sin in daily life. Ask Him for the assurance of His fatherly love and the strength to remain faithful through suffering.

The promise that “to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace” gives us words for asking God to reshape our attention and desires. Because Paul calls us to resist sin “by the Spirit,” we can ask for His help with particular habits, temptations, and choices. The description of God’s children as those “led by the Spirit of God” encourages prayer for a willing heart that follows His direction. The contrast between “slavery” and “adoption” also invites us to bring our fears to the Father rather than let them keep us away. Finally, the passage’s connection between suffering and future glory gives us reason to ask for endurance, trusting that hardship does not cancel our belonging to Christ.

Prayer prompt

In your own words, praise God for welcoming you in Christ, name what you need to confess, and thank Him for His Spirit. Ask your Father to help you live as His beloved child today, especially where you feel tempted or afraid.
