A.C.T.S. reflection
John 1:1–4
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Adoration
Worship Jesus, the eternal Word, Who was with God before anything was made. His glory is greater than we can fully grasp, yet His life shines as light for us.
John begins with “In the beginning was the Word,” directing our attention to the Word already present at the beginning. The phrases “the Word was with God” and “the Word was God” invite us to honor both His relationship with God and His divine identity. As John's Gospel unfolds, this Word is revealed as Jesus, so our worship is directed toward more than a wise teacher. The declaration “All things were made” through Him deepens our adoration: the One we approach in prayer is the One through Whom everything came to be.
Confession
Confess the ways you live as though you are your own source of life and wisdom. Bring before Jesus the places where you resist His light, trusting that you do not need to hide from Him.
The words “All things” leave no part of our lives outside our dependence on the Word. Yet we often act as though our strength, achievements, and understanding begin and end with ourselves. John's description of His life as “the light of men” also invites us to consider where we prefer our own way to His illumination. Although these verses do not directly command confession, they give us a loving and truthful starting point for acknowledging our dependence and our resistance to His light.
Thanksgiving
Thank Jesus for the life you have and the created world around you. Every ordinary gift can become an invitation to remember the One through Whom all things were made.
The statement “All things were made” through the Word gives thanksgiving a wonderfully wide horizon. Our lives and the world we inhabit are not things we brought into being ourselves. John then draws our attention to “life” and calls that life “the light of men,” giving us reason to be grateful not only for creation but also for the light found in Jesus. These words encourage us to receive daily life with gratitude while looking beyond each gift to its divine Source.
Supplication
Ask Jesus to shine His light into the places where you feel confused, weary, or spiritually dim. Pray for a heart that depends on Him and welcomes His guidance each day.
John places “life” in the Word and describes that life as “the light of men.” This makes Jesus the fitting One to approach when we need spiritual renewal and clarity. Because “All things were made” through Him, no part of our creaturely need is beyond His understanding or power. These verses do not promise an immediate answer to every question, but they invite us to bring our needs to the One in Whom life and light are found.
Prayer prompt
In your own words, praise Jesus as the eternal Word, acknowledge where you have resisted His light, and thank Him for the gift of life. Then ask Him to help you depend on Him in one specific part of your day.
